The Anatomy Of Luck
The past few weeks have been bordering on the edge of creativity. Not to say I’ve been fully dedicated to creating new and amazing things but let’s just say the whiteboard in my office has been getting its fair share of ideas thrown at it. From keynote updates to charity fundraisers (more about this later), and even the real beginnings of an actual book.
It’s an exciting time to be living in my head for better or worse… So I wanted to share one of the projects I have been making a few strides with which I would describe as a slightly different take on my story and experience through the lens of luck.
I’ve always been fascinated by how different people perceive my experience of the shark attack and one topic of intrigue often sparks the conversation of whether I have been ‘lucky’ or ‘unlucky’.
I’ve heard all of the opposing points:
From “You’re more likely to win the lottery”, to “You shouldn’t have survived”
“Should have stayed in bed that day”, to “If anyone could handle that situation, it’s you”
“I wonder why it chose you”, “Someone was looking out for you”
Luck, fate, chance, and the idea that things are ‘meant to be’ are all things that I’ve ebbed and flowed through while reflecting on my experience, as well as talking to others about it. It’s clear to me that as humans we love to look for answers but I can’t say that I have anything definitive to pin down as to why this happened to me.
However, what I do have is lived experience and perspective on how it feels to be on the good and the bad side of luck, something I can’t wait to share with an audience someday soon.
Luckily enough (the irony of using luck here is not lost on me), I do have an opportunity to potentially present this idea at SXSW SYDNEY 2024, but I need your help to vote.
If you’d be kind enough to follow this link and leave a vote for my session, I’d be extremely grateful and will return the favor by making this session available to everyone who supports it.
To see more information on the session, I have included the details below:
THE ANATOMY OF LUCK
What exactly is luck? Is it a completely random and non-discriminatory entity or do we have a say in how lucky or unlucky we can be?
The Anatomy Of Luck explores the dichotomy between our ability to influence and create our own luck, and whether that ability really matters at all.
By harnessing the perspective that luck has to offer, we can begin to inspire, motivate, and drive individuals and teams to build the resilience needed to achieve excellence at a sustained, high level.
Key Takeaways:
Perception Shapes Reality: Luck is not just a random occurrence but often a product of how we perceive and interpret events. By understanding and shaping our perceptions, we can influence our own luck and outlook on life.
Resilience in Adversity: Brett’s story illustrates how resilience can turn unlucky situations into opportunities for growth and positive change. By embracing challenges and setbacks, individuals and teams can develop the resilience needed to navigate uncertain times.
Creating a Positive Narrative: Luck is not solely determined by chance but can be influenced by the narratives we create. By fostering a culture of optimism, collaboration, and proactive problem-solving, teams can harness the power of collective perception to create their own luck and achieve success.
